Helping children is always seen as something positive until the parent starts to become over controlling, also known as a “helicopter parent.” A helicopter parent creates unnecessary stress and anxiety on a child, which often follows them throughout their college careers and later in life. In addition to helicoptering, some parents are known as concierge parents, where they believe that they need to provide for their children with whatever they want. While some tender love and care is never harmful, it can be too much at times and as a result, it can create feelings in parents such as guilt and shame when they feel that they can’t give their children what they need. The solution to both of these types of parents is balance. There needs to be a good and healthy balance between children’s needs and parent’s wants to create a healthy and stable relationship.
Key Takeaways:
- It is natural for parents to help their kids, to be there for them and to want to support them in everything they do.
- Parents need to consider the fact that although they want to help, there is a point where helping begins to become a hindrance for their kids.
- Many parents do not only involve themselves in every aspect of their kids life, they want to also control it in their own way.
“You may be familiar with the term helicopter parents—parents who “hover” over their kids, whose lives are enmeshed with those of their kids, and who are unable to let them go or be on their own, even for a short time.”
